Brazos Bend is a wetland park about 45 miles from downtown Houston, known for birds, alligators and 37 miles of flat trails around its lakes. Alligators are common in parts of the park, so keep your distance and keep pets out of the water. The Houston Museum of Natural Science's George Observatory is inside the park and opens on Saturday nights.

Things to do

Walk or bike the lake trails

Trails circle the lakes and head into the hardwood forest, and you can walk, bike or ride a horse on them. The paved, 0.5-mile Creekfield Lake Nature Trail has a boardwalk and observation deck, and the park has all-terrain wheelchairs.

Look for birds and alligators

TPWD recommends bringing binoculars. Read its alligator safety tips before you go.

George Observatory

The observatory opens Saturday nights year-round, weather permitting. Buy tickets online ahead of time, since they aren't sold at the park, and you'll still need a park day pass.

Fish from shore or the pier

You don't need a fishing license to fish from shore or a pier in a state park.
