Enchanted Rock is a pink granite dome that rises 425 feet above the surrounding Hill Country, 18 miles north of Fredericksburg. Most people come to walk up it: the Summit Trail is 0.8 mile and steep. There's no swimming and no biking on the trails, and dogs are kept to the Loop Trail, Interpretive Loop, campgrounds, and picnic areas. It's one of the busiest parks in the state, so reserve a day pass before you drive out.

Things to do

Climb the dome

The Summit Trail goes straight up the granite face to the top. TPWD lists it at 0.8 mile, about 45 minutes, and rates it challenging. It and the other elevated areas can close in wet weather.

Walk the Loop Trail

The 4.6-mile Loop Trail circles the main rocks. It's the only trail open after dark (until 10 p.m.) and one of two trails where dogs are allowed.

Backcountry trails

A newer backcountry area adds 11 miles of trails, plus ponds where you can fish. Pick up a permit and map at headquarters. Backcountry hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Rock climbing and bouldering

Climbers have to check in at park headquarters, where route maps and climbing rules are available. Echo Canyon, between Enchanted Rock and Little Rock, has some of the most popular routes.

Stargazing

Enchanted Rock is an International Dark Sky Park, with a Bortle rating of 3 from TPWD. The Loop Trail and the Scenic Overlook stay open after sunset, and rangers hold star parties; check the park's events page for dates.
